Ginkgo Hair Patch Test Policy

(Allergy Alert Test for colour services)

Why we patch test at Ginkgo

Colour products can cause allergic reactions, which can be serious in rare cases. A quick skin test helps us check for sensitivity before your colour appointment and keeps you safe. We work with Wella professional colour, including Wella Color Fresh.

Our policy at a glance

  • Required for every colour service, including toners that contain colourants, even if you have coloured here before without issues.
  • Timing: Complete the test at least 48 hours before your appointment.
  • Performed by a professional: A qualified Ginkgo stylist carries out the test using the specific Wella formula planned for your service.
  • Record and consent: We add the test to your client record. If we provide a take home kit, you must follow the instructions and sign a declaration confirming the test was completed and that no reaction occurred.
  • If you react: Do not proceed with colour. Seek medical advice and contact us. Light skin staining at the site can be normal and should fade.

Who needs a patch test

  • All new and returning colour clients before each colour appointment.
  • Anyone changing brand, formula, or service type.
  • Anyone who has had health, medication, or skin changes since their last colour.

How the test works at Ginkgo

  1. We mix a tiny amount of your intended Wella formula, including Wella Color Fresh when relevant.
  2. We apply a small dab to cleansed skin behind your ear or in the crook of your elbow.
  3. Leave it for the advised period, then remove any residue and observe the area for 48 hours.
  4. If you notice redness, itching, burning, blistering, or swelling, wash the area, do not proceed with colour, seek medical advice, and let us know.

(Placement and exact timing may vary by product line. Your stylist will guide you.)

Short on time

We offer quick pop in tests at our Kemptown salon. Please call as soon as you book so we can arrange a slot 48 hours before your colour service.

Record keeping and insurance

We record the date, product, and outcome of your Allergy Alert Test on your client file. This protects you and ensures compliance.

Reactions and alternatives

  • Any reaction means no colour that day.
  • We will discuss safe alternatives, for example a non oxidative gloss where suitable, or a cut and style.
  • We can reassess colour in future with medical approval and after a fresh test.

Strand tests

A strand test checks how your hair behaves, for example lift, tone, and condition. It does not check for allergy. We may recommend a strand test alongside the Allergy Alert Test for big colour changes.
